Thailand: BoxRec reopens the door to eight-round bouts

In a message received by Tunal Group on 27 October, Aku Zhang announced an easing of BoxRec’s criteria in Thailand: eight-round non-title bouts can once again be accepted, subject to competitive matchmaking and quality standards.

An important step for fighters and promoters building their careers in Thailand. According to Aku Zhang’s message received by Tunal Group today, BoxRec is extending its acceptance criteria, previously focused on ten- and twelve-round title bouts, to include eight-round non-title contests.

Aku Zhang explains that, after six months of implementing the policy, significant improvements have been observed in the quality of matchups involving foreign boxers in Thailand. This progress is the reason given for easing the restrictions.

The change remains conditional. Bouts must be genuine, competitively matched and meet BoxRec’s quality standards. Mismatches, fixed fights and manufactured wins will still be excluded. An eight-round format alone therefore does not guarantee that a result will be recorded.

For Tunal Group, this is a positive signal for the work of fighters, coaches and promoters committed to credible competition in Thailand. Recognition of bouts without a title at stake can help athletes document their development and present a clearer career history to partners and future event organisers.

The message says the situation will be reviewed again in a few months, with further easing possible if the positive trend continues. It does not announce general acceptance of four- or six-round bouts, or automatic retrospective recording of previously missing results.
